Matty Ross fielded an impressive entry, particularly with BBoys, BGirls, Just B, a memorable documentary looking at a young man inspiring others through dance.
A commendable effort.

27-year-old Matty Ross runs Sleepysoul Productions in Edinburgh and his three main film projects so far have a common theme running through them: raw talent. In 2005, he made the short 'The Time Is Now' about Siu-Hun Li, a 25-year-old actor from Edinburgh looking to make it to the big time. In the same year, he also made 'BBoys, BGirls, Just B' about Nico Major, a breakdancer and dance teacher, and just recently he's made 'There and Back Again', a feature-length documentary about the unsigned Edinburgh band, The Kays Lavelle, who he spent a year-and-a-half filming. All Ross's films show great passion for his subjects, who he lets speak for themselves and to whom he obviously wants to do real justice with his films.

‘BBoys, BGirls, Just B’

This was one of my first films outside college, and was produced by Strangeboat in Edinburgh as part of a commission from Channel 4 Ideas Factory. It is the film that has had the most impact on people, in no small part due to Nico Major - the BBoy, style-writer, and creator of StyleTrial - a place where BBoys and BGirls come together to learn, develop, and share their skills in the art of breaking.

I've been lucky enough to meet my fair share of inspirational characters on my journey thus far, and Nico certainly is that. His passion and dedication to his art, and his determination to encourage and teach youngsters through dance is something I truly admire. From spending time with him and researching the movement itself, it helped me start seeing things in a different light, and really paved the way for the direction I find myself heading in now.....
